Testimonials To Our Success

Nothing speaks to the effectiveness of the Active Reading Clinic and the Reading Revolution™ method like testimonials from our former students and their parents. Here are some success stories sent to us, and some we scanned from our "Brag Book". Last names have been removed to protect privacy.

My name is Michelle and I have always prided myself on giving my children great beginnings. My third child Raquel struggled with learning disabilities. I first applied for an Individual Education Plan for Raquel when she was in the first grade, but the school district claimed she fell into a "gray area" and was reluctant to provide her with the help she so desperately needed. Raquel was in the third grade, and way behind the other children in her class, by the time my persistence and many visits to specialists finally convinced the school district she qualified for special education support. Even then, the district's opinion was that Raquel would remain stuck at a pre-primmer level and that she had no ability to learn. But I knew that could not be true. I knew that if I could just give my daughter the gift of reading she would always be able to take care of herself.

After exploring many private schools and learning centers I found the Active Reading Clinic. They took the time to test Raquel, help me understand what her needs were, and how they would be able to help. We attended the Clinic through many school years and summer sessions. It took a while for Raquel to catch up, but she loved her teachers and going to the Clinic gave her a great sense of accomplishment. She is now a junior in High School and a strong reader at grade level. She did it! The Active Reading Clinic gave my daughter the gift I so wanted for her - the gift of reading!

I am a proud supporter of the Active Reading Clinic and I serve on its Board Of Directors. I hope to always stay active in the quest to help all young people share in the gift of reading.

June 2008
I was in A.R.C. 3 years ago with Emmy Plisch (who is now retired). I am now in the 5th grade and my lowest grade is a B+. Reading is my favorite subject thanks to the clinic. When I was here it was more like playing and fun to me. ARC has probably changed my life. Reading is great and the clinic gets the treat of showing kids that. Both my brothers are doing the program now (age 7 & 5). I hope they have as good of a time I had. The same goes for future A.R.C. students who will hopefully be devouring books just like me in no time!
Love an old student.

Tessa attended the Active Reading Clinic for seven months, from September 2000 until her graduation from the program in March 2001. Here she describes life before and after her time in our program.

"What is the point of school if it does not teach you how to read?," I often wondered as a first grader. My classmates already seemed to be able to read chapter books while I still stumbled over my alphabet. My second grade teacher wanted me to stay back and my third grade teacher told my mother that I would never be able to attend college. In fifth grade my Mom enrolled me in the Active Reading Clinic and my path finally took a turn for the better. With the right kind of help I began to speedily catch up with my classmates, and at the end of the fifth grade I was at the reading level of a first month fifth grader. Now I am a junior at Acalanes High School and am working on or above grade level in all my classes.

Before my junior year people tutored me, now I tutor others. I became a peer tutor at Acalanes, working with freshman to seniors in subjects ranging from Algebra to English. I understand what the students are going through and I believe that helps me be a more understanding tutor.

I no longer feel pain in attending school, but pleasure in its place. I am able to learn and achieve my goals with determination. I am enrolled in Honors Physics and Pre-Calculus, I am a competitive swimmer, and I have maintained a 4.0 GPA. Although I currently do not know where I would like to go after I graduate, I know that I will attend college.

Melissa is a classic example of a child brimming with ambition and potential who was temporarily held back by difficulties with developing her reading skills. The Active Reading Clinic helped her identify her own unique learning strengths and apply them to developing reading mastery. That paved the way for many more wonderful accomplishments.

I shocked my mom when I read a book with out
being forced to.

P.S. I liked the book!!

This is an incredible program. Our daughter has been hooked on Reading ever since she was in clinic years ago!

Nick is now 14 and an honor roll student in 8th grade. He has no learning problems and reads fluently + easily. It seems like a lifetime ago that the kindergarten teachers wanted to place him in special ed. Thanks to reading revolution school/reading is easy and fun for him. He is a walking advertisement for the success of the program.

Thank you!
