Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who do you teach?

We work with non-traditional learners of all ages who do not learn well in the traditional classroom environment where sitting still, listening, repeating and filling in the blanks are the norm. We also work with students diagnosed with a variety of learning disabilities such as dyslexia, LD, ADD, ADHD, auditory and other processing issues. We understand that these students are not necessarily learning disabled; they simply learn differently. We help each student discover their own unique learning strengths and apply them to reading, and to school and life in general.

Q: How do you teach?

We use the innovative, multi-sensory Reading Revolution™ method. Our activity-based lessons are designed to be fun and engaging. Students learn on the move while playing interactive games, using large motor movements to reinforce sound and letter recognition. Students progress through a consistent series of steps to decode and spell complex words, stimulating logical and critical thinking skills to enhance comprehension. These activities culminate in a weekly "treasure hunt" activity that students find exciting and gratifying. Reading Revolution™ weaves together in context the essential skills of sound recognition, word recognition, spelling, fluency and comprehension.

Q: How long does the program take?

Each student is paired with a trained Reading Revolution™ teacher for 50-minute one-on-one lessons twice a week. Lesson plans are individualized for each student. Since students enter the program with different initial reading skill levels, and progress at different rates, there is no set length of time for students to complete our program. Students generally complete 40-100 lessons before graduating from the program, depending on their age and other factors. This roughly corresponds to six months to one year of continuous lessons.

Q: How much does the program cost?

Current tuition and fees are posted on our One-On-One Lessons page.

Q: How will I know my student is making progress?

The Active Reading Clinic performs an initial assessment to gauge a student's reading skills when they first enter our program, we perform additional periodic assessments as students progress through their lessons, and we create periodic progress reports. We also document our students' progress in the "Talk Book", which helps parents stay informed about, and celebrate, their student's accomplishments.

Q: Do you teach writing and handwriting skills?

We do teach students to form the letter shapes that correspond to the sounds they make, but we do not teach composition or penmanship skills as such.

Q: How do I get my student started in your program?

The first step is to schedule an evaluation interview for your student. This is a critical first step in which your student will work one-on-one with the clinic Director, or Assistant Director, for approximately one hour. Parents or guardians are encouraged to attend. Call our office to schedule an evaluation interview.

We encourage you to call with any other questions or concerns you may have.
